Gender in the Workforce
I am taking a social work class, and we talk alot about gender, race, society, religion, and a lot of other factors that deal with social problems in the world. One that struck me was the male vs. female side of thing when it comes to the workplace. The lack of respect for women is a shameful truth. I have a man in class who talked about working at a credit union, 2 people were in control a man and a woman. When the man would visit everyone would straighten up and get to work in a hurry. When the woman would visit everyone was laid back and would be like," Hey Sherry, How are ya?". It's disturbing to know women are treated differenetly, even by people under them, when she has the same position as a man. Also a woman is considered a bitch if she is demanding, whereas a man is considered in control for the same attitude. The most disturbing thing is that men applying for the same job as when, on average, get paid 3 thousands dollars more, starting out in their career. This is NOT RIGHT!

Immigration
One of the biggest social issues in America, is immigration problems. There are a great number of persons here illegally, who are often mistreated because of that. There are many cases where these people are discriminated, and treated as if they were trash. I think it is an important factor to consider, that possibly we as Americans can help these people become citizens, so they can partake in the wonders America can offer. It is important to know that everyone who lives in American, is an immigrant here unless you are Native American. Everyone deserves the chance to live a better life, and if someone thinks that life is here, they should be entitled to it. It is going to take educated and caring people to help with this issue.

Smoking Ban
I think the smoking ban at IU is absurd. Ticketing people for a right they have is just wrong. I am not a smoker myself, but i think it is ridiculous the new rule here at Indiana. I think there are much bigger problems in the world to worry about, rather than if someone is smoking 29 feet away from a building, rather than 30. I also do not understand how the university expects to keep this rule intact. Every smoker I talk to does not care about this rule and does not plan on following it. I think the university should focus on more severe problems, other than smoking.

Vote 2008
The latest project we have done for my citizens media class is a poster encouraging people to vote. This upcoming election is a very important and maybe the most diverse one in United States history. I think it is really something to see a woman and an African American up for presidency. In elementary we would always talk about when we would have a president other than a white male, and it seems very likely this could happen this election. I haven't followed the elections close enough to give my two cents, but i think it is very important that all of us research and vote on a candidate that can help turn our country around. The next four years needs your opinion, get out there and vote!

Education in Schools
I have a big problem with the education system that today's kids are being put through. Kids are learning more and more at an early age, and being stripping of their imaginations. Children are also going through school systems where there is only one concrete answer, there is no grey, only black and white. They are being taught that the way the school thinks is right is the only way, and basically being asked to conform to the education. I think there needs to be teachers who will encourage education, and kids who want to branch out. It seems like there is no time for any real important issues in schools, that concerns me for higher level education. Students in high school are so bombarded with work and to sticking to a certain curriculum, there is no time to talk about worldly matters that effect us and our world everyday. Kids are being kept in the dark about how the world functions. Especially in America, kids don't have the opportunity to learn about other cultures and the world around them. I think this is important because they will need to learn about other people, because one day they will be working with people of different backgrounds, and it is important to respect their culture. The only way this can be done is through awareness and education. It saddens me that school has become all about just work, and that kids are being conformed to just think one way. I had a girl in my social work class, who talked about how she couldn't read between until sixth grade. All through grade school if she missed pronounced a word or misspelled one she was told this is wrong, this is not how it is done. In sixth grade however, a teacher started to reward her if she was close to getting the word right. This helped her mentally and it was what helped her get over her problem with reading. I believe teachers should start allowing kids to be okay with a little off track, and to encourage imagination and passion in their work. Life isn't all about Math and Science, i also believe kids should be allowed to take courses that help them learn about life.

Violence in Music
In today's culture, a growing problem in America is violence in music. We have the highest homicide rates in the world, and we need a fast solution. It does not help the increase in violence due to the popularity of it in modern music. Too many people are dying by seeing violence as a role, something necessary to live, and that there is no way to change it. A lot of deaths are due to problems with money, jealousy, infedelity, and bullying. It is constantly spread through our media and is a big social problem, that is growing worse. Music tends to portray more and more of violence with gangs, relationships, drugs, and schools. It is important that we reduce the crime and death rate. Too many people are dying to an ugly reason of just pure violence.

Media 101
It's fair game to assume and to say that media has a huge impact on the United States, and many other countries around the world. It is what keep us intune with what is going on. We find our information from newspapers, magazines, books, tv, internet, and advertising. I believe media has its good and bad issues. Media can be good in the way that it can spread a powerful word. It can reach out to people and their needs. I also think media is very dangerous, because it often tells us what someone else wants us to here, not the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I think there is a lot of conspiracy involved with media, and we are brainwashed into thinking what others want us to think.
